Marie Cullen - Textural Expressionist
Notebook
This is the begining of my online notebook, soon to be populated with the ideas, sketches, thoughts and developments that happen before, during and after a piece has been produced.
Last week we spent some time in the magnificent Mourne Mountains in Co.Down, Northern Ireland. We were researching new walks for a forthcoming Northern Ireland walking tour (thanks to Andrerw Cullen for the help!) One was at Bloody Bridge, reportedly the scene of a massacre in 1641, duting the Rebellion. Nowadys, it is a desperately beautiful area. We managed to do some sketching, fighting the wind but thankful that the rain eased off to allow us walk and sketch in peace! Here I am engrossed in my work!

For the past two years I have been working on a series about the ancient Bogs and Rocks of Ireland with a lot of focus on the West coast and especially the fabulous Burren area! I've also been visiting Greece a lot and try to time time out from floating in that glorious turqouise water (ooohhh!) Here are some results from my notebook:

Kontarena Village, Lefkada, olive groves.Ink pen and pencil.

Next-door courtyard with lemon tree. Ink pen and pencil.

A sketch from my notebook. It's of Mt Elati, 1,167m, in the heart of Lefkada's mountainous island. In ink and pencil.

A sketch of the village of Kontarena from our balcony, ink and pencil.

The mountain is marvellously rugged, cracked and worn, rising right out of the olive groves. Oil pastels.

The villages are full of gorgeous tumbledown houses. Ink and pastels.

Effie and Giorgio's house. Ink and pastel.

Hillside villages. Ink and pencils.

An oil pastel sketch of the church and village of Kontarena.
